Lee and his team worked incredibly hard and communicated well to let us know when they would be doing the work. They were always professional and courteous and often worked on weekends to speed up the work. We are really pleased with the quality of the finish and would thoroughly recommend the company.

How to find a local, skilled bricklayer

Looking for a skilled bricklayer service to work on your construction project? We’ve got you covered with all the information and tips you need to find a high standard tradesperson for the job.

Factors to consider when hiring a bricklayer

It’s really important that you choose a reliable bricklayer company to carry out work on your home. Failing to do this can result in unnecessary stress and expensive repairs.

Before you hire, you should do your research to ensure that your bricklayers:

  1. Are an experienced company with a strong history of successful projects
  1. Have all the necessary licenses and insurance needed to protect you and their workers
  1. Have a good range of positive reviews from previous customers vouching for their reliability
  1. Are offering the services you need, and are available to carry out the work in the timeframe you need it done by
  1. Are quoting a price and payment option that you are happy with, having compared the quote with other local bricklayer companies

A local bricklayer is more likely to respond quickly, as they’ll be right around the corner and ready to help. To find bricklayers through Rated People, simply post a job to receive a free quote.

What can a bricklayer help you with

Bricklayers build and repair brick walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. They’re also the tradespeople you turn to for any repointing work you need done on your home. More often than not they’re hired to build garden walls, though they can also be hired to construct brick driveway paths and other brickwork projects.

There are a few things you might need a bricklayer for, including:

  • Building chimneys
  • Building garden walls
  • Building a pizza oven
  • Repointing work
  • Stonework and stone cladding work

The mortar that keeps brickwork together decays over time. Repointing is the process of filling in and repairing the old mortar between bricks on a brick wall, so that they can remain structurally sound and continue keeping water out.

Other projects, such as conservatory building, groundwork and foundations, and cavity wall insulation are usually carried out by a general builder.

How much does it cost to hire a bricklayer?

How much it will cost you to hire a bricklayer depends on a range of factors, such as the scope and complexity of the job and where you live in the UK.

The average cost to hire a bricklayer is between £120 and £250 a day. It could cost you anywhere between £600 and £1,700 to have a new garden wall built, depending on the size of the boundary. You can expect to pay anywhere between £50 and £70 per m2 to repoint a wall.

Planning on building walls in your garden? Or simply want to get an existing wall repointed? To receive a more accurate quote for brickwork services, speak to a skilled bricklayer in your local area today.

What planning permission do you need for bricklaying jobs?

Minor repair and maintenance jobs such as repointing do not require planning permission, unless you live in a listed building.

You won’t need planning permission to erect a new garden wall unless the wall:

  1. Exceeds two metres in height
  1. Is next to a highway used by vehicles and exceeds one metre in height
  1. You live in a listed building or the gate forms a boundary with a neighbouring listed building

For more information about erecting a garden wall, read our planning permission guide or visit the Planning Portal website.

Questions you should ask a bricklayer

Are you licensed and insured?

Make sure to ask your bricklayer what insurance they have before you hire them. While it’s not a requirement, it’s a good idea for your tradespeople to have public liability insurance to cover you and them against any accidental damage done to your home or personal injuries. Hiring fully insured tradespeople guarantees protection for both parties and ensures your bricklayer is legally compliant.

How many years of experience do you have?

Knowing how many years of experience your bricklayer service has will allow you to pick a specialist who you are confident has sufficient expertise to carry out a high standard job. When you’re finding a bricklayer through Rated People, head over to their profile to check out the pictures on their work gallery and their ratings and reviews. They can also list any relevant apprenticeships and courses they may have done under their profile description.

How long will the job take?

Knowing what your project’s estimated timeline is will help you set realistic expectations about how long your bricklaying or repointing job will take to complete.

How much will the job cost?

Asking how much the job will cost will help you budget for your project and will ensure price transparency before you hire. How much you’ll end up spending depends on the scope of your project, and where you live in the UK, so make sure you add plenty of details when you post a job.

Do you use subcontractors? If so, are they licensed and insured?

If your bricklayer is planning on using subcontractors, then it’s a good idea to confirm the qualifications and insurance coverage of everyone who will be working on the project. Make sure you ask about subcontractors and any licenses and coverage before you hire.

I am a tradesperson who works in the middle of the ocean. Testing the submit to make sure that it works as expected with auth header removed. This should save and display in a very nice way. This should edit still work as normal, hopefully I will still see the old.
