Excellent job done would recommend
Robert
James was responsive to our request for a quote, for felling a large ash tree we suspected had died. He replied to messages quickly, turned up when he said he would, and was correct that our tree had in fact died. James was professional the whole time and we would have no hesitation in hiring and recommending him to others in the future.
Joanne
Excellent service. Hard working, polite, professional team. Lovely job. Would recommend.

How much does it cost to install a gate?
The cost of gate installation can vary based on materials, size, and complexity:
- Garden Gates: Typically cost £100 to £300 for standard options.
- Driveway Gates: Ranges from £500 to £2,000 for larger, automated, or custom gates.
- Wooden Gates: Usually £150 to £600 depending on design and customization.
- Metal Gates: Generally costs between £200 and £1,500, with options for added security features.
Pros and cons of wooden and metal gates
Wooden Gates:
- Pros:
- Aesthetic Appeal: Wooden gates offer a warm, natural look that blends beautifully with garden landscapes, traditional home exteriors, and rustic aesthetics.
- Customizable Design: Wood can be easily shaped, stained, or painted to match various styles and colour preferences. This flexibility allows you to add decorative elements, such as carvings, to create a unique appearance.
- Privacy: Solid wooden gates offer excellent privacy, blocking views into your property, which is ideal for both residential and garden areas.
- Cons:
- Maintenance: Wooden gates require regular maintenance to keep them looking good and to protect them from weather damage. Sealing, staining, or repainting every few years is often necessary to prevent moisture absorption, warping, or rotting.
- Lifespan: While treated wood can be durable, it generally has a shorter lifespan than metal and may be more susceptible to wear from weather conditions and pests if not maintained well.
Metal Gates:
- Pros:
- Durability: Metal gates, especially those made from wrought iron or steel, are highly durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions without warping or rotting. Metal’s strength makes it ideal for security-focused installations.
- Low Maintenance: Unlike wood, metal requires minimal upkeep. High-quality metal gates are often coated with rust-resistant finishes, meaning they usually only need occasional cleaning and rust prevention to stay in top condition.
- Enhanced Security: Metal gates provide a high level of security due to their sturdiness. They are challenging to break, making them a suitable option for driveway and property boundary gates where security is a priority.
- Cons:
- Higher Initial Cost: Metal gates are often more expensive upfront than wooden options, especially for high-end or custom designs.
- Limited Style Flexibility: While metal gates can be elegant and modern, they offer less variety in terms of colour and style customization compared to wood. Metal gates are often associated with a more industrial or classic look, which may not suit all property styles.
Ultimately, wooden gates are ideal for those prioritising aesthetics and privacy, while metal gates suit those seeking durability, security, and low maintenance. Each material has its own advantages, so the choice depends on your specific needs and style preferences.
How long does it take to install a gate?
Simple garden gates can often be installed in just a few hours to a single day, while larger and more secure driveway gates typically require 1 to 3 days, especially if they are automated or custom-built. Custom gates with unique designs or specific features may extend the installation time further to allow for precise setup and adjustments. Factors like weather conditions, site preparation, and additional features such as automation can also influence the overall timeline.
Other gate installation FAQs
Do I need planning permission for a driveway gate?
Generally, planning permission isn’t needed unless the gate exceeds local height limits or is in a conservation area.
Can gates be automated after installation?
Yes, most gate types can be fitted with automation equipment, though it may require additional costs.
How can I maintain a wooden gate?
Regular staining or sealing helps protect wooden gates from moisture and UV damage, extending their lifespan.

Very quick, efficient, if not a little bit steep financially.
Initially I was only going to have Decking done in my garden. After Andrew came and saw my garden he gave me a different idea and provided with me a scatch of paving and deck to transform my garden into some thing different. After he has done this it looks so nice. He transformed my garden completely. He is a very hard working gentleman. Very reasonable with price and very sincere perfect and honest. While he was working I decided to have fencing done as well. Andrew has become like a family member to us. I will recommend Andrew very srongly to everybody without any hesitation

A very reliable, hardworking, clean and tidy couple of young men ( very hard to find today). Nothing too much trouble for them and very eager to please. Victor and his team worked on the kitchen for 3 days and I hardly even noticed they were there. They were tidy and very quiet. They did exactly as they said they would and started and finished on time. Really pleased with the workmanship. The finish is a lot better than I had hoped.
Fork Handles were a great company, They replied instantly with a date to meet and discuss. We met with Steve & immediately, came to an agreement, and he was able to start as we wanted. He did everything that he said he would, was punctual, hard working, honest & a good clear communicator, even telling us when he was running later than anticipated, and we would certainly use him again, and recommend him to others. I’m also happy for anyone to contact me directly.
