Craig got in touch quickly, gave me a rough estimate over the phone and answered all my questions. Surveyor arrived on time, gave instant quote. Price was good. Michael and (another) Craig turned up to do the job on the day, time given. Good, tidy job. Can't fault anything, from start to finish!! Would recommend!

George and his team are experienced builders, replaced my front door with a custom frame/sidelights and raising the floor level in the hallway quite quickly - in fact, they were the only who came next day, gave a quote straightaway and were ready to start in just couple of days. They also had all the necessary tools and materials, were ready to buy something additional quickly on the day - if further adjustments were required to fit everything as I asked. Thanks a lot for your help, guys!

Dmitry

Highly recommend. These guys did a fantastic job of constructing our pergola and decking. Very hardworking and reliable. The job was completed in the time frame agreed and to a very high standard. We would 100% use them again.

Local mould & damp experts

What does a damp & mould specialist do?

A damp and mould specialist is trained to identify, assess, and resolve issues related to moisture in your home. These experts conduct thorough surveys to determine the source of dampness, whether it’s from condensation, leaks, or rising damp. They provide tailored solutions to treat and prevent both damp and mould, helping to maintain the structural integrity of your property and improve indoor air quality.

By hiring a damp and mould specialist, you ensure that the problem is addressed at its root, preventing further damage and potential health risks.

How to spot damp and mould?

Common signs of damp include discoloured patches on walls or ceilings, a musty smell, or peeling wallpaper. Mould often appears as black, green, or brown spots in areas with high humidity, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or basements. If you notice any of these signs, it’s essential to consult a damp and mould surveyor to assess the extent of the issue and recommend the best course of action.

How much does it cost to repair damp?

The cost of repairing damp in your home can vary widely depending on the type and severity of the problem. Understanding the potential expenses involved will help you make an informed decision when addressing damp issues. Here’s a breakdown of what you might expect to pay for different types of damp repairs:

  1. Type of Damp Issue:
    • Rising Damp: This occurs when moisture from the ground rises up through the walls of your home. Treatment often involves installing a damp-proof course (DPC), which can cost between £400 to £1,000 for a single wall. For a more extensive area, the cost can rise to £3,000 or more, depending on the size and accessibility of the affected area.
    • Penetrating Damp: This type of damp is caused by water penetrating through the external walls or roof, often due to leaks, cracks, or faulty guttering. Repair costs can range from £200 for minor repairs, such as fixing a leaking gutter, to over £2,000 for more extensive work, like repairing brickwork or installing new waterproofing membranes.
    • Condensation Damp: Often found in areas with poor ventilation, condensation damp can usually be managed with better ventilation solutions, such as installing extractor fans or dehumidifiers. Simple ventilation fixes might cost around £100 to £300, while more comprehensive solutions like installing a Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) system could range from £800 to £1,500.
  1. Extent of the Damage:
    • Minor Damp Issues: Small areas of damp or mould that are caught early might only require surface treatments, such as anti-mould paint or sealants, which could cost between £50 to £150.
    • Moderate Damp Problems: If the damp has started to cause visible damage to walls, floors, or ceilings, more significant repairs may be necessary, such as replastering affected areas. These costs can range from £250 to £750, depending on the size of the area and the materials required.
    • Severe Damp and Structural Damage: In cases where damp has been left untreated and has caused substantial damage to the structure of your home, such as wood rot or structural weakening, the costs can escalate significantly. Full-scale repairs, including replacing damaged timbers, repairing brickwork, and redecoration, can cost anywhere from £1,000 to £10,000 or more.

Other mould & damp FAQs

What is the difference between mould and damp?

Damp refers to the presence of moisture in a building, which can lead to the growth of mould. Mould is a type of fungus that thrives in damp conditions. While dampness is the cause, mould is a visible symptom that can have serious health implications if left untreated.

Can mould and damp make you ill?

Yes, prolonged exposure to mould and dampness can lead to a variety of health issues, particularly respiratory problems such as asthma, allergies, and even infections.

Do dehumidifiers stop mould?

Dehumidifiers can help reduce moisture levels in the air, which in turn can prevent the growth of mould. However, they are often a temporary solution. It’s crucial to identify and fix the underlying cause of dampness to effectively stop mould from returning.
