Craig got in touch quickly, gave me a rough estimate over the phone and answered all my questions. Surveyor arrived on time, gave instant quote. Price was good. Michael and (another) Craig turned up to do the job on the day, time given. Good, tidy job. Can't fault anything, from start to finish!! Would recommend!

George and his team are experienced builders, replaced my front door with a custom frame/sidelights and raising the floor level in the hallway quite quickly - in fact, they were the only who came next day, gave a quote straightaway and were ready to start in just couple of days. They also had all the necessary tools and materials, were ready to buy something additional quickly on the day - if further adjustments were required to fit everything as I asked. Thanks a lot for your help, guys!

Dmitry

Highly recommend. These guys did a fantastic job of constructing our pergola and decking. Very hardworking and reliable. The job was completed in the time frame agreed and to a very high standard. We would 100% use them again.

Local porch & canopy experts

What is the difference between a porch and a canopy?

A porch is a covered structure that extends from the front of a building, offering a sheltered entryway. It usually includes walls, windows, and a door. A canopy, on the other hand, is a roof-like structure that provides shade or shelter without the enclosure of walls. It’s typically used over doorways, patios, or walkways.

Understanding these differences can help you decide what best suits your home and needs. Both porches and canopies can enhance the curb appeal of your property while providing practical benefits.

What does a porch & canopy expert do?

Porch and canopy experts specialise in designing, constructing, and installing these structures. They assess your home and recommend the best solutions based on your preferences and the architectural style of your property. Their services typically include:

  • Custom design tailored to your home
  • Selection of materials and finishes
  • Structural assessments and compliance with building regulations
  • Installation of the porch or canopy
  • Quality checks and follow-up services

These professionals ensure that your porch or canopy is not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and compliant with local building codes. Roofers will often be able to help with canopies, however for a whole porch build, you will want to consult a builder.

How much does a porch/canopy cost?

Understanding the cost of a porch or canopy installation is crucial for planning your home improvement project. Several factors can influence the overall price, including the size, materials, design complexity, and your location. Here’s a detailed breakdown to help you estimate your budget:

Factors Affecting Cost

  1. Size and Dimensions: Larger porches or canopies require more materials and labour, which increases the cost. Measure the area where you want the structure to determine the necessary size.
  2. Materials: The choice of materials significantly impacts the cost. Common materials include:
    • Wood: Offers a classic look but requires regular maintenance. Costs range from £1,500 to £4,000.
    • uPVC: Durable and low-maintenance, uPVC is a popular choice for modern designs. Prices range from £1,000 to £3,000.
    • Aluminium: Strong and weather-resistant, ideal for sleek, contemporary styles. Costs between £2,000 and £5,000.
    • Glass: Often used for canopies to provide a stylish, transparent cover. Prices vary widely based on design and quality, typically from £1,500 to £4,000.
  3. Design Complexity: Custom designs with intricate details or unique features will cost more due to the additional labour and specialised materials needed.
  4. Location: Installation costs can vary based on your location. Urban areas may have higher labour costs compared to rural regions. It’s essential to get quotes from local installers to understand the price range in your area.

Average Cost Estimates

  • Porch Installation: A basic porch can start at around £1,000. Mid-range options typically cost between £2,000 and £3,000, while high-end designs with premium materials can reach up to £5,000 or more.
  • Canopy Installation: Simpler and generally less expensive than porches, canopies range from £500 to £2,000. The price depends on the material and size, with glass and aluminium options on the higher end.

Additional Costs to Consider

  • Labour: Professional installation ensures safety and quality. Labour costs can vary, so it’s wise to get multiple quotes.
  • Permits and Regulations: Depending on your location, you might need planning permission or building regulations approval. Check with your local council to understand the requirements and associated fees.
  • Maintenance: Consider the long-term maintenance costs. Wood, for example, requires periodic sealing and painting, while materials like uPVC and aluminium are more low-maintenance.

Other porch & canopy FAQs

How long does it take to install a porch or canopy?

The installation time can vary based on the complexity of the project. Typically, a simple canopy can be installed in a day, while a porch may take several days to a couple of weeks.

Do I need planning permission for a porch or canopy?

Planning permission may not be required for small porches and canopies, but it’s always best to check with your local planning authority to ensure compliance with regulations.

What materials are best for porches and canopies?

Common materials include wood, uPVC, aluminium, and glass. The choice depends on your aesthetic preference and the level of maintenance you’re willing to commit to.
